RVA welcomes LEGO
In 1932, Ole Kirk Kristiansen began making wooden toys in Denmark. A few years later, this toy maker branded his creations LEGO, which is derived from two Danish words Leg Godt meaning “play well”.
The LEGO brick that we are all familiar with was launched in 1958 and continues to have a global impact on people of all ages. Today, the LEGO Group remains a family-owned company headquartered in Billund.
RVA welcomes LEGO
But Richmond, Virginia is about to become a part of the LEGO story.
After looking at over 40 U.S. states, the LEGO Group picked us to be the location of their first factory in the US. Breaking ground in Chesterfield County, once completed the 1.7 million square foot facility will employ more than 1,700 people. The anticipated opening is in 2025.
Environmentally friendly facility
The Virginia facility will be designed with our environment in mind. LEGO has pledged to match all of its energy needs with an on-site solar park. Therefore operating as a carbon neutral factory.
Expect growth for the region
Whether you are a LEGO fan or not, this is a huge win for our region. To be picked for the first location in the U.S. is very exciting and will continue to drive growth to our region and make us a desirable spot to settle down.
