Richmond ABCs - Letter J
Do you ever end up with some free time, but aren’t quite sure what to do with it? I want to make sure you have plenty of ideas to explore RVA! Because Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer.
To help you I’ve compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to kick-start ideas of things to do around town. This week I focus on the letter J, here we go!
James River
The James River is Virginia’s largest river, flowing across the whole state. The James River watershed encompasses approximately 10,000 square miles, which is almost 25% of the state. And it is home to one-third of all Virginians, including us Richmonders.
The James River runs right through downtown Richmond providing all sorts of fun activities from paddleboarding, rafting, kayaking, wading, fishing, or simply relaxing on the rocks and taking in the city sites.
Venture Richmond provides a great round-up on James River activities in downtown Richmond. And if you are interested in learning more about the trails and parks that surround the James River, you can learn more about the James River Park System here.
Jackson Ward
Once known as the “Harlem of the South,” Jackson Ward is a historic neighborhood in Richmond. The neighborhood has been home to the US’s first female bank president, Maggie Walker, and famous Hollywood dancer Bill “Bojangles” Robinson.
Jackson Ward is known as the birthplace of Black entrepreneurship and today there has been a resurgence and revitalization happening throughout the streets thanks to community organizations and initiatives like the Jackson Ward Collective, Historic Jackson Ward Association, and the JXN Project.
Jackson Ward is rich in culture and history, so there are plenty of things to do such as the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site and the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia. And there are a number of restaurants and shops you will want to check out. For a full list of attractions, restaurants, and shops, click here.
Mama J’s
Mama J’s is Richmond’s best soul food dining experience. It’s a family-owned and operated restaurant in the Historic Jackson Ward neighborhood. It’s like going to grandma’s house for Sunday dinner.
Jefferson Hotel
The Jefferson Hotel is a luxury hotel in Richmond that opened in 1895 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Lewis Ginter planned the development of the hotel and hired architects based in New York City. In the 1930s the hotel became famous for alligators in the lobby.
Over the years the hotel has received significant restorations and upgrades. And it is an iconic location in downtown Richmond. From its regular tea times, dining experiences, and beautiful architecture, there is plenty to enjoy.
Journeyman’s Adventure Co
A unique bicycle shop, Journeyman’s Adventure Co offers a large scope of bicycles, parts, and accessories for the adventure bicyclist. The owner even offers to meet with customers for coffee to discuss building a custom bike and planning bicycle tours around the world.
Julep’s
Winning numerous awards, Julep’s is quickly becoming a downtown Richmond restaurant favorite. With a fresh mix of flavors capturing the flare of Atlanta, Charleston, New Orleans, and Savannah, this new southern cuisine is a tasty treat.
Julep’s can accommodate large dinner parties, luncheons, and receptions.
