Christmas Lights in RVA

Christmas time is almost here! The turkey may still be thawing in your fridge for Thanksgiving, but that doesn't need to stop us from thinking about the upcoming holiday season. And I don’t want you to miss out on the many Richmond Christmas traditions, especially when it comes to the Christmas lights. So, here’s a list of Christmas light experiences in Richmond (or near RVA).

RVA Illuminates

The tradition continues with the official countdown to turning on the downtown Christmas lights. This free activity is very family-friendly and will have multiple performers to help set the mood. This annual event happens on the first Friday in December at the Kanawha Plaza. This year it will be on December 2, 2022. The Mayor will flip the switch at 6 pm, lighting up the downtown skyline.

Tacky Light Tour

One of Richmond's more quirky traditions is the Tacky Light Tour. Many Richmonders go above and beyond when it comes to decorating for Christmas and the results are incredible. Some homes win national recognition, including a home that won $50,000 on ABC's "Great Christmas Light Fight”. Many homes have been on the list for years, with some homes providing refreshments and music to enhance the mood. There is no correct way to do your tour but RVA Tacky Lights Tour provides resources to plan the perfect tour for your group. Want to join in on the fun? There are several stipulations for being included in the Tacky Tour list including a 40,000 light minimum, your house located in the greater Richmond area, and a photo submission. Have fun exploring Richmond and enjoying what makes our city special.

Illuminate Light Show

If you are interested in seeing a professionally designed light scene be sure and check out the Illuminate Light Show. Held at the Meadow Event Park in Doswell, the tour is synchronized to music as you meander through the park from the comfort of your own car. Be sure and pack some snack food as you enjoy the lights. The park can get crowded so be sure and time your visit accordingly. Running now through January 1, 2023, entrance is $30 per car.

Dominion GardenFest of Lights

Another Richmond favorite is the Dominion GardenFest of Lights held at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens each holiday season. Each year the gardens are illuminated with lights in a fun theme. This year is “Seeds of Light” taking inspiration from seeds and fruits to reveal an interconnected world of diversity, amazing strategies, and enduring beauty. GardenFest of Lights will b held from November 21, 2022 through January 8, 2023. Advanced tickets are required, so make sure you plan your visit and buy your tickets ahead of time.

Bulbs in the neighborhood

Join in the fun and decorate your home! Make sure you have help when using ladders and have a plan on how you want to mount lights. There are many types of light mounts and you want to pick the one that works best for your home. Also, consider buying an outdoor timer for your lights, this will allow you to save electricity and extend the life of your lights. Make sure your cords are out of the elements to protect against water damage.

Do you have an HOA? If you do it is important to know what is allowed in terms of decorating. If you are looking to buy a new home and plan to decorate it with hopes of making the Tacky tour list make sure it is allowed in your neighborhood. Nothing ruins the Christmas spirit more than being told no.

Have a safe and wonderful holiday season!
