Richmond ABCs - Letter I

Do you ever end up with some free time, but aren’t quite sure what to do with it? I want to make sure you have plenty of ideas to explore RVA! Because Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer.

To help you I’ve compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to kick-start ideas of things to do around town. This week I focus on the letter I, here we go!

Ice Skating

No matter what the temperature is outside, Richmond offers ice skating all year round at SkateNation Plus and Richmond Ice Zone.

Located in Short Pump, SkateNation Plus also has laser tag and an array of arcade games. For those located south of the river, Richmond Ice Zone is your location to ice skate. So, grab your sweater and warm socks to hit the rink.

Islands

Belle Isle and Brown’s Isle are the most commonly known islands in Richmond. But according to a recent river mapping project, there are 72 parcel IDs for islands in the Richmond part of the James River.

While many locals might think these islands belong to everyone, the islands have been bought, sold, and transferred going back to British rule in the colonies

While the city owns the majority of the islands, eight islands are privately owned. Including Sharp Island which boasts as the only camping site in Richmond city. Who knew Richmond was an island destination?

Ice Cream

If you are in the mood for a sweet treat, Richmond’s got the scoop when it comes to ice cream. There are a number of local shops that you will want to sample.

Including Bev’s Homemade in Carytown which serves classic flavors and a rotation selection of special flavors.

Now located in Forest Hill, Charm School will tickle your tastebuds with soft serve, plus they have vegan options.

Looking for true Italian gelato? Then check out DeLuca Gelato with up to 36 flavors to choose from each visit. These are just a few to explore, Richmond has many more ice cream shops to check out!

Iron Horse Restaurant

Located in Ashland, the Iron Horse Restaurant serves modern Southern cuisine. It offers the best vantage point to watch traffic on the busiest rail line on the East Coast. So, if you have a train lover in your family check out the Iron Horse for great food and a railway experience.

Island Shrimp Co. - Rocketts Landing

Feel some tropical vibes, as you enjoy a menu inspired by island destinations around the world at the Island Shrimp Co. at Rocketts Landing. You can even enjoy waterfront dining with views of the Richmond skyline. A perfect place for your next happy hour! Plus, they have a second location in Chesterfield.

Keep exploring RVA

I hope this list sparked some new ideas for you. Get out there and keep exploring this great city.
