Richmond ABCs - Letter H

Do you ever end up with some free time, but aren’t quite sure what to do with it? I want to make sure you have plenty of ideas to explore RVA! Because Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer.

To help you I’ve compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to kick-start ideas of things to do around town. This week I focus on the letter H, here we go!

Seven Hills of Richmond

Did you know that like Rome, Richmond was built on seven hills? But with all the hills in Richmond, can you guess which ones were the official seven? According to a 1937 ordinance by the City of Richmond, the seven official hills are Union Hill, Council Chamber Hill, French Garden Hill, Navy Hill, Gambles Hill, Shockoe Hill, and Church Hill. Here’s an interactive map of the seven hills.

Holocaust Museum

The Virginia Holocaust Museum aims to educate about the Holocaust, through memorialization and documentation of the atrocities with exhibits, programming, and outreach. The museum first opened in 1997 and within a few years outgrew the space to handle the number of visitors and school groups. In 2003 the museum relocated to the American Tobacco Company Warehouse on E Cary Street and has seen steady growth. The museum is free and open to the public year-round.

Hollywood Cemetery

Established in 1847, Hollywood Cemetery is a fully operational cemetery located on the banks of the James River. It is the resting place of two United States Presidents. The 135 acres of natural and architectural beauty have earned its recognition as a registered arboretum. With beautiful views and a great walk through history, Hollywood Cemetery is an iconic location in RVA.

Hardywood Park Craft Brewery

With two locations in Richmond, Hardywood started in 2011 as one of the only two craft breweries in the city and helped pave the way for RVA to be one of the top craft beer destinations in the world. With great outdoor space at both locations, Hardywood is becoming a Richmond go-to spot. And it is a great event space, we’ve attended a number of events there.

Hotel Greene

With drinks and food, Hotel Greene is a truly unique indoor miniature golf course. Its quirky decor will have your eyes entertained through the 13-hole course. We haven’t had a chance to try this out yet, but it has been on our list since its opening a few years back.

Hiking

You might not think city and hiking go together. But think again! Richmond has some great trails around the James River from the Buttermilk Trail to Pony Pasture Rapids Trail. Mostly easy to moderate, the trails in Richmond will provide a scenic afternoon without too much effort. You can check out a list of hiking trails in Richmond here

Keep exploring RVA

I hope this list sparked some new ideas for you. Get out there and keep exploring this great city.
