Richmond ABCs - Letter G

Do you ever end up with some free time, but aren’t quite sure what to do with it? I want to make sure you have plenty of ideas to explore RVA! Because Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer.

To help you I’ve compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to kick-start ideas of things to do around town. This week I focus on the letter G, here we go!

The Glass Spot

The Glass Spot is the only public access hot glass studio in Richmond. They offer several levels of instruction from workshops to intensive courses. The workshops are a fun way to try a new type of art form and they have an array of things to create. I had the opportunity to create a heart-shaped paperweight a few years ago on a double date. I highly recommend this activity.

Garnett’s Cafe

Garnett’s Cafe is a classic neighborhood sandwich shop is in the heart of the Fan. They have sandwiches, salads, soups, plus dessert. They have a date night special and picnic baskets so you can eat in the park across the street or take your lunch to the river. The building dates from 1908 and was initially a drug store.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden is 50 acres of year-round beauty on a historic property. There are more than a dozen themed gardens including a Children’s Garden, Rose Garden, Asian Valley, and Cherry Tree Walk. Throughout the year the Garden holds special exhibits and events including Butterflies Live, Fall PlantFest, Yoga at the Garden, Dominion Energy GardenFest of Lights, and more.

Great Shiplock Park

Great Shiplock Park is located in Shockoe Bottom at Dock and Pear Streets. In the 1850s the Great Shiplock was built as the eastern-most lock of the historic James River and Kanawha Canal locks. This canal served as a transport hub for tobacco warehouses along Dock Street and extended 197 miles west. In 2013, the park underwent a huge renovation, turning this neglected historic site into a beautiful riverfront park.

Gelati Celsti

Since 1984, Gelati Celsti has served the Richmond area with homemade, small-batch ice cream using Italian equipment. Now with seven locations around Richmond, there is sure to be a location near you! And with 24 House Favorites and more than 85 flavors rotated throughout the year, you are sure to find a flavor to enjoy. My favorite flavors are Just Ask, which includes Oreos and peanut butter, and salted caramel.

The Grapevine

The Grapevine is a Greek and Italian restaurant located in the West End. It is a family-owned restaurant dedicated to the Richmond community. The restaurant is great for a date night, family dinner, or even a special occasion with its group dining options.

Keep exploring RVA

I hope this list sparked some new ideas for you. Get out there and keep exploring this great city.
