Richmond ABCs - Letter C

Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer. Sometimes though you get stuck in a rut and forget about what else is out there and miss out. To help you not miss out on local events we have compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to hopefully kick-start some activity for you of things to do around town. This week we focus on the letter C, here we go!

Carytown

You could argue that Carytown is the most iconic street in Richmond. Full of character and interesting shops, it is always a must-see. From fine dining to quick eats, Carytown has it all, in addition to numerous unique shops with interesting wares. Several street musicians set up shop in the evening and on weekends. Plus, Carytown also has several fun traditions. My favorite tradition is the Zombie walk, which happens in October every year. Participation is free or you can observe from the street.

Canal Walk

One of the prettiest strolls around, you can explore the city and its unique bond with the James River on the Canal Walk. There are many stops along the way, from exploring several islands to museums. There is even a canal boat tour loaded with the history of the city.  Find out more about all the attractions, restaurants, and access points by visiting Venture Richmond’s spotlight on the historic Canal Walk

Capital One

I don't generally list companies in my exploring Richmond blogs, but this is one company that is hard to ignore. They have a very nice community presence in Richmond and employ quite a few Richmonders. Capital One has a campus in Richmond complete with a treehouse! They also have a number of Capital One cafes located around the city, including one in Carytown. If you are interested in taking on a new career they are a decent option to check out.

Camping

Camping in Richmond itself is hard to do and generally frowned upon. There is actually only one legal camping option in the city of Richmond. And it is an island! So make sure you have a canoe or kayak before heading out to Sharp’s Island for a unique camping experience.

Also, Richmond is only a short drive away from some spectacular day hikes and camping spots. If you ever need to escape into nature head to these peaceful spots! Richmond is less than 2 hours from many parts of the Appalachian Trail and the Shenandoah National Park.

State Capitol

Richmond is the state capital of Virginia. The Virginia State Capitol is impressive and worth a visit. The structure was conceived by Thomas Jefferson and became a National Historic Landmark in 1960. There are many historical monuments around the area and walking around the grounds connects you with all the events that occurred nearby.
