Richmond ABCs - Letter B

Richmond has so many things to do and activities to offer. But sometimes you can get stuck in a rut. You miss out on enjoying our city to the fullest. That’s why I launched the Richmond ABCs blog series.

To help you not miss out on local activities we have compiled a list starting with each letter of the alphabet to hopefully kick-start some activities for you to do around town. This week I focus on the letter B, here we go!

Byrd Theatre

One of Richmond's most famous icons has to be included in the list of things to do around town. Located in the heart of Carytown, the Byrd Theatre offers affordable movies in the classiest venue in town. The theatre has been lovingly restored and is a testament to how things used to be. They also have a working organ, the Mighty Wurlitzer, which is played before weekend showings. Find out showtimes and other info here.

Brown’s Island

Brown’s Island is extremely popular among locals for its location, walkability, and events held throughout the year. They hold weekly concerts during the warmer months and host festivals during the weekends. Dominion Riverrock is one of the island's most popular events and is being held May 20-22, 2022.

Several local companies offer canoe, paddleboard, and kayak rentals at the boat ramp on-site to explore the James. You can find out more info about the island by visiting their website

Belle Isle

If Brown’s Island is known for its events then Belle Isle is known for its activities. This island is full of history, from the civil war to modern times. The walking bridge provides gorgeous views of the city and river as you walk over the James to get to the island. The island boasts numerous running and biking trails. It also has a rock climbing spot located at the old quarry in the center of the island. Be sure and bring your own gear if interested.

The island is also a popular sunbathing and swimming spot, providing easy access to the rapids of the James. In addition to the trails on the island, you can also explore several old buildings and try out the bike park. Belle Isle provides free entertainment to the adventurer in all of us, I hope you are able to visit it soon!

Bread

Richmond is known for having a ton of great local restaurants with excellent entrees and grub.  One of my favorite sandwich shops in town is the Secret Sandwich Society. They have amazing unique flavor combinations and a fun theme. Each sandwich is named after a famous president with ingredients linked to their term.

For example, you could order the Kennedy (slow-roasted pork shoulder, ham, pickles, swiss, roasted garlic mayo & mustard on a toasted brioche bun) and remember the bay of pigs while enjoying lunch!

If Sandwiches aren't your thing they also have several delicious salads named after famous first ladies. Their pimento cheese fries are worth the trip and I hope you enjoy discovering this secret shop downtown.

Richmond Beer Trail

The Richmond region boasts more than 30 craft breweries, distilleries, cideries. Plus, hundreds of restaurants serve local beer and cider on tap. Vinepair named Richmond the #1 craft beer destination in the world.

Download the Richmond Beer Trail map for a fun experience. Visit the local breweries and ask to get your map stamped. After visiting 5 places, you can win some free swag.

Keep exploring RVA

I hope this list sparked your interest and will help you get out there to try new things. I’ve been in Richmond now over a decade and I’m still amazed at my new discoveries each year. Check out list A for more Richmond ideas
